Michelle is the owner and founder of Upside Aerial Arts & Fitness in Burlington, NC. Growing up with severe, debilitating asthma, she couldn't participate in physical activity of any kind. In her 20's, she found yoga which helped immensely. But when she tried aerial in her mid-30's, her whole world changed. She loved it so much, she gave up her career as a professor to become a full-time aerial instructor, performer, and studio owner. At age 44, Michelle created this piece to celebrate her biggest triumphs: letting go of years of identifying as weak and fragile, dropping her "sensible career path" to follow a crazy dream, and her aerial studio community surviving and thriving despite the pandemic.
